Positive effects:

Social support: They offer emotional aid, enable people to connect with those who have had similar experiences, and create feelings of belongingness.

Self expression: Social media sites are the best platforms where users can be able to express themselves in any way they want, share their thoughts and emotions as well as display their creativity.

Access to resources: Mental health resources such as online therapy sessions, support groups and educational content can all be easily accessed through social media.

Negative effects:

Comparison and envy: This leads to unrealistic comparisons between lives depicted in others’ highlight reels on social media platforms thus making one feel unaccomplished.

Cyberbullying: These open channels for bullying, harassment, and other forms of online abuse are rampant within social media.

Sleep deprivation: Sleep patterns may be disturbed by exposure to screens and recurring notifications from various social media platforms.

Anxiety and depression: There is a connection between excessive use of these platforms leading to an increase in symptoms related to anxiety and depression.

Unrealistic expectations: This often exposes people who use it to unrealistic beauty standards, fitness standards or lifestyle standards that make them compare themselves negatively with others hence lowering their self-esteem .

Social isolation: However , people consider this technique as a means to connect individuals together
