About this project

Turkey's Rare Blue Supermoon Dazzles Astronomers On August 19, a stunning blue supermoon, the  closest full moon to appear in Istanbul's skies this year, excited astronomers across the country. The blue supermoon  appeared in the Istanbul sky for the first time at night, stunning onlookers with its breathtaking sight until  dawn. A large number of sky lovers gathered at Lake Salda, also known as Turkey's Maldives, to witness the rare celestial phenomenon caused by the mesmerizing view of the lake and the blue moon. A similar postcard-like photograph of the celestial spectacle was captured against the stunning backdrop of  Ankara's Kocatepe Mosque, the capital's largest mosque. A supermoon is more of a technical term than a scientific one, but it occurs when the full moon is closer to Earth than usual, its orbit around Earth being particularly close and the phases of the full moon overlap. Because the moon's elliptical orbit is constantly changing, such events usually occur three or four times in a row each year
